Why calendar reminders don't wake you

A calendar reminder on iPhone and iPad is a notification. Notifications follow Silent mode and Focus: with the device on silent, the reminder arrives without a sound. An alarm rings anyway.

How is a notification different from an alarm?

Why is the reminder quiet on purpose?

Because most appointments don't need an alarm. A calendar with twenty entries a day, all of them ringing, would be unbearable. So iOS files the calendar reminder with the notifications, and those follow Silent mode and Focus. For the client call at 10:30 that means: the phone is face down, the Work Focus is on, the reminder arrives and goes unseen.

What you can do without another app

• Allow Calendar in your Focus The Focus settings let you add the Calendar app as an allowed app. That helps in a Focus; in Silent mode it stays quiet.
• Turn the volume up Helps as long as the device is not on silent.
• Set an alarm by hand for important appointments That rings until the appointment moves. Then you move the alarm by hand.
