Peal help: setup, permissions and sync
This page covers how to set up Peal, which permissions it needs and how it picks up new appointments. The short answers, such as why an alarm stays quiet or what the subscription includes, are in the common questions on the home page.
Set up Peal in five steps
- Download Peal and open it. Setup walks you through the next steps.
- Allow access to your calendar, with full access. Without it Peal sees no appointments.
- Allow Peal to schedule alarms. Without this permission nothing can ring.
- Pick the calendars that should ring. Birthdays and subscribed calendars such as public holidays start switched off.
- Ring a test alarm under Settings, Test. It rings five seconds after you tap. Lock the device in the meantime and hear it come through Silent mode.
You can run setup again at any time: Settings, "Run setup again".
Which permissions does Peal need?
Two, and both are in iOS Settings under Peal:

How does Peal stay up to date with new and moved appointments?
Peal reads your calendars every time you open it. For it to pick up new appointments in between, two things help:
- Leave Peal in the app switcher and switch on Background App Refresh under Settings → Peal. Then Peal looks on its own now and then.
- A Shortcuts automation has Peal look at fixed times. That is the way you can rely on.
Set up the Shortcuts automation
- Open Shortcuts and tap Automation.
- Tap New Automation, then Time of Day.
- Pick a time, repeat daily, and choose Run Immediately.
- Tap New Blank Automation.
- Search for Peal, add "Sync Alarms", and tap Done.
Morning, midday and evening covers most days. Under Settings, Calendar sync, you tick off that the automation is set up.
How do I know the sync is working?
Under Settings, Calendar sync, you see when Peal last looked. Under Today, every appointment says when it rings, and the ones that have passed say what became of them. So you always know where you stand.
How loud does the alarm ring?
At the ringtone volume. Turn the ringtone up and the alarm gets louder too. Under Settings, Tone, you can hear the alarm tone in advance. With Peal Plus you pick one of five tones of Peal's own there, and each calendar can get its own.
How do I stop an alarm?
On the Lock Screen you slide it away, like an alarm from the Clock app. On an unlocked device you tap "Got it". With Peal Plus the alarm has a second button, "Later": it rings again after a few minutes, until you stop it.
Quiet hours and pause
Quiet hours are a window in which nothing rings, every day, such as 22:00 to 07:00. An appointment they silence says so on its row.
Pause is part of Peal Plus. It switches off every alarm, or those of one calendar, until a date, such as for a holiday, and ends by itself.
